Coverage beyond OEM end-of-life: Cisco® WS-2960 switches remain reliable in the field long after Cisco® has retired the platform. TeamKCI offers full Cisco® hardware support for the 2960 family, including 2960S and 2960X variants, so you can keep these switches in production without Cisco® renewal costs on hardware the OEM no longer prioritizes.
The Cisco® Catalyst 2960 Series is obsolete: its End-of-Life Status (EoL Status) is past Last Date of Support. Cisco® published the End-of-Life announcement in October 2013 (the End-of-Life Announcement Date), End-of-Sale (EOS) followed in October 2014 (the End-of-Sale Date), and the Last Date of Support: HW, the EoL date most people quote, was October 31, 2019.
In between, every other Cisco® milestone passed: Last Ship Date: HW, End of SW Maintenance Releases Date: HW, End of Vulnerability/Security Support: HW, End of Routine Failure Analysis Date: HW, End of New Service Attachment Date: HW and End of Service Contract Renewal Date: HW. TeamKCI picks up exactly where Cisco® left off, with third-party maintenance through 2026 and beyond for as long as you choose to run the hardware.
Cisco®'s recommended replacements are the Catalyst 9200/9200L for enterprise access and the Catalyst 1300 Series for SMB and edge. Both require a full refresh cycle, new IOS XE training, and OEM-priced licensing. TeamKCI’s alternative: keep the 2960 you already own on a TeamKCI maintenance contract, and replace hardware only when you decide to.
After the Last Date of Support (LDoS), the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) no longer takes cases for the WS-2960, and the Cisco® RMA process for defective hardware is closed. There is no advance replacement, and no Engineering Failure Analysis (EFA) on returned units, because routine failure analysis ended earlier.
TeamKCI replaces both: our engineers troubleshoot the switch itself, and Hardware Replacement ships tested spares from our inventory. Coverage starts on an SN no check basis: each serial number is listed on your contract, but there is no Cisco® entitlement check, re-certification or inspection fee.
Every Cisco Catalyst Switch in the 2960 family, by PID (Cisco® product ID) or SKU:
Send us the PID and serial number of each Cisco® device and we'll quote per unit.
Run show inventory on the switch, or read the label on the chassis: it lists the PID, version ID and serial number (SN) of the chassis and its modules. The PID tells you which Cisco® End-of-Life announcement applies, because Cisco® publishes EoL status per PID, not per serial number. Every base WS-2960 PID has passed its Last Date of Support.
Send TeamKCI the PID and serial number list from your production networks and we'll confirm the EoL status of each unit and quote coverage, with no Cisco® serial-number check needed.
The end of the PID tells you which image the switch runs. Models ending “-L” run the LAN Base image. Models ending “-S” run the LAN Lite image, and so do the 2960-L “-LL” models.
LAN Base has the fuller Layer 2 feature set: more VLANs, richer Access Control Lists (ACLs) and more QoS options. LAN Lite covers basic access switching, with fewer VLANs and limited ACLs. Both are Cisco® IOS images, and TeamKCI supports switches on either one, LAN Base or LAN Lite.
At End of SW Maintenance Releases, Cisco® stopped bug-fix IOS releases for the platform. At End of Vulnerability/Security Support, it stopped PSIRT IOS releases (the security fixes for published Cisco® advisories), so there are no more security updates for the last 2960 image. Every CVE published since is unpatched on the platform.
TeamKCI covers the hardware, parts and engineering side: tested replacements, configuration reviews and tightening ACLs and VLAN segmentation, so aging gear stays production-ready without OEM software support.
The security risks fall into three categories: CVEs left unpatched since Cisco® ended vulnerability support; no support for modern security standards like TrustSec and MACsec; and audit findings under PCI-DSS, HIPAA and ISA/IEC 62443 that flag unsupported gear in production networks as a control gap. A documented TeamKCI maintenance contract closes the compliance-documentation finding and secures your hardware supply chain.
A Cisco® service contract is no longer available for the WS-2960: the End of Service Contract Renewal Date and LDoS (October 31, 2019) have both passed. For 2960-family variants still inside Cisco®'s window, TeamKCI's equivalent SLA is typically up to 90% less than Cisco® service contracts, with faster engineer callback (15 minutes vs. a tiered queue), onsite spare inventory at no extra charge, and flexible contracts with no forced refresh cycle.
Yes to both. Power over Ethernet (PoE) and PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at, up to 30 W per port) are supported on the PoE+ 2960 variants and on the 2960-X/XR models. TeamKCI maintains the full Catalyst 2960 family, including the Cisco® Catalyst 2960-Plus Series Switches and the Cisco® Catalyst 2960S 24- and 48-port switches, alongside WS-2960 base models under one post-warranty contract.
Cisco®'s recommended replacements are the Catalyst 9200 Series Switches and the Catalyst 9200L for the access tier, the Catalyst 9300 (Cisco 9300) where you need stacking or more uplink capacity, and the Catalyst 1300 Series for SMB and edge. Each one means new hardware in every closet, new IOS XE training, and Network Essentials or Network Advantage licensing per device.
You don't have to migrate to keep your network supported. A TeamKCI maintenance contract keeps the 2960 switches you already own covered, with engineers on call, a 15-minute callback and spare parts on hand, for a fraction of the cost of a refresh. If one closet genuinely needs a new feature, migrate that closet; TeamKCI maintenance keeps the rest of the fleet covered.
No — SD-WAN, SASE, and 5G live at the WAN edge, not the access tier. Those features belong on Cisco® Catalyst 8200 Series Edge Platforms or Cisco® Catalyst 8300 Series Edge Platforms, not an access-layer 2960. Your WAN strategy is independent of your access switches; adopting SD-WAN or SASE doesn’t require replacing the 2960 fleet, and TeamKCI maintains the 2960 regardless of what runs at your edge.
No. SD-Access (Cisco® fabric mode), MACsec (link-layer encryption), and TrustSec (SGT policy) require Catalyst 3000/9000-era hardware. If your access-tier security posture doesn’t need link-layer encryption or Cisco® fabric mode, the 2960 remains a reliable LAN access switch. Specific closets that do need these features can migrate selectively without replacing the entire 2960 fleet.
The 2960 runs classic IOS, not IOS XE (which is a Catalyst 9000/8000-era platform). It supports basic sampled NetFlow but not Flexible NetFlow or Streaming Telemetry. For most access-layer monitoring, SNMP, syslog, and sampled NetFlow are sufficient. Classic IOS on the 2960 is well-understood and documented; if your organization is standardizing on IOS XE for other platforms, the 2960 can remain in production on classic IOS until actual replacement.
